January 2014 4th What a great weekend. We had wrestlers at two tournaments today. All worked hard and some even placed. Cole and Connor Arnett, along with Hadley and Seth Horne went to Ritchie County Novice tournament. Benjamin Morgan, Marshall Nuzum, Eli and Johnny Knight went to Preston County tournament. No matter what you guys and girl did great! A big thank you to Gary and Anthony for taking the time to coach our wrestlers. Parents that also coached today thank you too.
December 2013 What a great turnout at the 10th Annual Roy Michael Classic at North Marion High School. Wrestling in this tournament were; First timers: Eli and Johnny Knight, Nigel Winans, Xavier Sinnett, Veterans: Cole and Conner Arnett, Aaron and Lucas Murphy, Bryce Carnes, Jeremiah Woods, Mason Stark, Seth and Hadley Horne, Austin and Caleb Corley. Everyone wrestled hard. I am proud of all of you. Those of you that are first years have taken a huge step and shown that you are a wrestler. You got out there in front of everyone and wrestled your heart out. We will continue to work on Kevin's 3 rules and work on everyone's strengths and weaknesses. Remember this is always a learning opportunity; so even if you didn't win a match this weekend you are still getting better. You all are on your way to a great season. Get ready January 2014 is just around the corner.
Novemeber 2013 well it has been a while since we got an update added here. The Bridgeport wrestling season has officially started. We have a lot of new/ young faces along with returning wrestlers. There are some new tournaments scheduled this season giving us the opportunity for new competition. We are looking forward to a great season with all of you.
February 2013
2nd - ROD OLDHAM MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT We had one wrestler attend this tournament and he did exceptionally well. Josh Wojciechowicz wrestled is heart out and received 1st place in his bracket. Congrats Josh!
14th - Valentines Day, originally was scheduled as no practice, but with the last tournament canceled the kids needed some mat time. A special Thanks to Aaron Bushko and the West Fairmont team for putting together a quad meet and getting several kids at least 2 matches or more. We had a great turnout with Addison Courtney, Mason Stark, Josh Wojciechowicz, Jeremiah Woods, Jack Spatafore, Connor Arnett, Lucas Murphy, Aaron Murphy, Dillion Murphy, Bryce Carnes, Brody Carnes, Adam Hess, Owen Hess, and Alexis Stuart. A large group meant a larger cheering section for our wrestlers. Thank you parents for putting your Valentines Day plans aside and coming out supporting your wrestler and the team. Thank you Coaches Chris Courtney and Matt Hess for being there, and thank you to the wives for allowing them to postpone Valentines Day plans.
16th - 1st Annual Tony Williams Memorial Wrestling Tournament in Grafton. We had a good turnout there also. Glad to see many of the same faces that were at the Quad meet. Lucas Murphy placed in the morning half, and Josh Wojciechowicz placed in the afternoon half. Also in attendance was Alexis Stewart, Connor Arnett, Bryce Carnes, Brody Carnes, Josh Jackson, Aaron Murphy, Dillion Murphy and David Snodgrass. Great job, the improvements were there, everyone is improving and it is showing. Thank you Coach Jackson for being there and helping the team.
23rd - Dupont Panther Prowl in Belle WV. This was a great tournament located just minutes from Charleston. Josh Wojciechowciz placed in two brackets and Bryce and Brody Carnes also wrestled and had a great day. It will be a great tournament to continue taking our wrestlers there. A lot of great wrestlers were there, and ours can learn new thing from new faces.

January 2013
5th - We had a good Saturday down in St. Albans for the "2nd Annual Mahindra Tournament". It was a good tournament to see other wrestlers and styles from WV, OH, and KY. There were about 380 kids there, and they ran the tournament with the bout system. It started a little slow but ran better through the day, everyone was out by 5 pm. Bryce Carnes and Aaron Murphy placed, Dillion, & Lucas Murphy, and Brody Carnes also competed. They had some tough matches and I'm sure each learned a lot. It is only the 2nd year Mahindra put on the tournament so they are still working out the kinks, but over all it was a good tournament. Looking forward to next weekend with Mineral Wells on Saturday and West Fairmont on Sunday.
12th - At the 20th ANNUAL MINERAL WELLS INVITATIONAL
13th - West Fairmont 26th Annual Wrestling Tournament
19th - 25th annual Panther Classic Saturday
I unfortunately was unable to attend the above tournaments due to a death in my family, so details will be added when I get them from the other coaches.

December 2012 was a great month. We had a couple tournaments early on, helping us spot moves we need to refresh and new moves to introduce. Wojo placed in the tournament in Clarksburg, and Nathan Jackson, Josh Jackson, Aaron, and Bryce placed at North Marion. We have some work to do still in practice, and the kids are improving, so we are headed in the right direction.
I know January will be a busy month with every weekend filled with tournaments some farther than we have traveled in the past. It will be a great opportunity for the wrestlers to see different faces and get them out of the grind of "oh, him again". Thank you parents for taking your Saturdays and filling them with wrestling. It will pay off for each wrestler. I never tire of saying that "the wrestlers understand practice better and what they are doing by being in the tournaments."
I am thankful that we have so many great coaches that are involved with the program. We would be much more limited without them. Coach Jackson, Coach Courtney, Coach Hess, and Coach Anderson. Also a big thank you to those parents who get out on the mats and help the little guys.
Parents it helps if you quiz your kids at home also. Ask your child what a single leg takedown is, or a Russian, etc. If you ask them to show you these things at home, and roll around on the floor with them it will help them remember better.
For those of you wondering why we are traveling further than before, or have missed the practice where I talked about the Conference I will cover it again. There is a conference that has grown some in WV. It is mainly in the southern part of the state, and has grown some in the north. The conference charges each team a fee to be part of it. You then travel to where the conference tournament is held that weekend, it could be Elkins, or it could be Beckley. Once at the tournament all brackets are round robin. What that means is if there is 11 people in your bracket you will wrestle 10 times (each person in your bracket), if there is 21 then you wrestle 20 times. There is a lot of mat time and that may be good for a first year wrestler but you see the same people every time and it becomes a mental barrier for some. There are no medals or trophies given out except at the conference's final tournament. A lot of the younger wrestlers are excited to win a trophy or participation medal, it is what drives them at times until they become competitive. I have spoken to some other coaches in other strong programs who felt like their better wrestlers suffered from lack of competition in the conference and felt their program was better off in the open tournaments. We have had to look at tournaments further away because some of the tournaments we have attended in the past are no longer open tournaments. If you still have questions about it, talk to me after practice.
